Le Thi Bich Hanh from Long Bien District, Hanoi has adopted energy-saving solutions for her family, including using compact fluorescent bulbs, installing energy-saving devices, such as air conditioners and refrigerators mounted with inverter and switching off lights when not needed.

Energy-saving habits have become more common

Many households in Hanoi have adopted similar solutions in order to respond to the "Household Energy Efficiency and Conservation" movement. Thanks to these solutions, Le Thi Bich Hanh's family saved 10 percent from their monthly electricity bills in 2012.

According to Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade Deputy Director Pham Duc Tien, domestic power consumption accounted for over 50 percent of total commercial power usage in the city. Therefore, the movement has contributed to reducing power consumption and allowed families to save costs.

After three years of implementation in Hanoi, the movement has achieved good results. Hanoi Energy Conservation Center Director Dao Hong Thai said that according to a survey, 100,000 households in Hanoi are currently engaged in the movement. In addition, 100 training courses have been organized for households in 29 districts. Hanoi People's Committee also decided to reward seven groups and 13 individuals for their impressive achievements.

Energy-saving habits have become more common. Many families in Hanoi now have at least one power-saving device in their home, such as compact fluorescent bulbs, air conditioner or refrigerators with mounted inverters. Nguyen Thi Dac from Cau Giay District, Hanoi said that her family consisted of four people and previously used six normal bulbs in the yard, kitchen, dining room, bathroom and bedrooms. After using compact fluorescent bulbs and switching off lights when not needed, her family saved VND30,000 per month on their electricity bill.

Do Ngoc Hoa from De La Thanh Street, Hanoi has a unique way of saving power. Her family regularly uses hot water and air conditioner and paid nearly VND1 million a monthly electricity bill. However, after replacing the old water heater with a solar energy water heater, her family saved up to 15 percent on the family monthly electricity bill.

In order to promote these results and respond to an "Energy Efficiency and Conservation in Household" movement in 2013, Hanoi is striving to save about 30 million kWh of electricity. In addition, the overall goal of the energy-saving program in Hanoi is to save 235.5 million kWh of electricity in 2013, an increase of 26.5 million kWh of electricity compared to 2012 through the implementation of energy-saving activities in industrial zones, export processing zones, craft villages, buildings and the transportation industry. Together with the average price of electricity of VND1,616 per kWh according to plan this year, the program would save up to VND380 billion.
