A skincare company has launched a social campaign named 'PowerLight a Village' with the hope of providing solar power to villages that do not have electricity.

It has collaborated with Project Chirag as its implementation partner. The foundation claims to have been championing the cause of rural electrification and says it has been instrumental in electrifying 125 villages across India.

The 'PowerLight A Village' aims to get consumers to contribute by making a pledge through social media. Villagers will be provided a solar lamp that has an inbuilt mobile charging unit, a solar tubelight and a solar panel to charge their equipment. In a country like India which receives 300-325 days of sun annually, these units may help villages get some supply of electricity.

The project wants to reach more than a million consumers and encourage them to participate in the campaign. It is an extension of an existing online drive and will be promoted through digital media, allowing people to contribute virtually to the electrification drive. Every like, share and comment will contribute a predetermined unit of energy. This will be coupled with events where men will be invited to pedal bicycles that will record the energy generated''. By some mechanism, the sum of these activities will translate into actual donation.

A spokesperson for the company said, Consumers need not contribute anything in cash or kind. Just their online support towards the initiative will help the team light up a village.'' Another partner in the initiative Harshil Karia said, Brands taking on projects for the social good is the (way of the) future. Brands speak through their actions more than advertisements.''
